The Juice

Rise and Grind today is June 30th, 2010. A Missouri VA hospital is catching hell for allegedly exposing over 1,800 veterans with HIV or hepatitis. The hospital sent out over 1,810 letters to veterans that were treated at the VA hospital notifying them that they may have been exposed to several potentially life-threatening diseases. The exposed individuals are at risk of HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C after visiting the medical center for dental work. The issue stems from a failure to clean dental instruments properly, the hospital told CNN affiliate KSDK.Dr. Gina Michael, the association chief of staff at the hospital, told the affiliate that some dental technicians broke protocol by hand washing tools before putting them in cleaning machines. The instruments were supposed to only be put in the cleaning machines, Michael said. The hand washing started in February 2009 and went on until March of this year, the hospital told KSDK.The hospital has set up a special clinic and education centers to help patients who may have been infected. However, Carnahan said he feels more should be done and those responsible should be disciplined. This is really scary, you would never think that going to the hospital, a place where their suppose to make you better is getting you sick. WOW! My prayers are with those and their family.
In other crazy news Wal-Mart is at it again. This time, they fired a man who was prescribed medicinal marijuana to treat his brain cancer. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart for the termination of a Michigan employee whose doctor verified his illness qualified for medical marijuana use. Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, fired Joseph Casias in November 2009 after he failed an on-the-job injury-related drug test. Casias suffers from a rare form of cancer in his nasal cavity and brain, and he relied on his doctor’s medical marijuana prescription to alleviate the daily pain. Wal-Mart officials say they are sympathetic to Casias’ condition, but the company needed to put the safety of its customers and associates first. Michigan is an at-will employment state, which means employers can terminate a worker for any reason except for being in a federally protected class such as race, gender and religion. The ACLU is arguing legal medical marijuana users should also be protected under a Michigan law. He has battled with his cancer for more than a decade. The lawsuit says the medical marijuana was able to provide him with pain relief. Well I mean if this man has a doctors note, excuse, something letting his job know and the right procedures are taken I don’t see a problem. Should people who have legal prescriptions be permitted to continue working, even after failing a drug test? Ladies a Gentleman thats been my time, same place tomorrow I'll Holla!!!PEACE
